All dogs, cats, and/or ferrets in Sumter County are required by law to be licensed and vaccinated against rabies. The owner is required to show proof of rabies vaccination from a licensed veterinarian. The license period may correspond to the effective period of the Rabies vaccine (1 or 3 years). When the Rabies vaccination is due again, it should also be time to renew your pet's county license.
Licenses cannot be valid longer than the expiration of your pet's Rabies vaccination. You may purchase a 1 year Pet License for a pet that received a 3-year Rabies vaccine, but you are required to purchase a new county license when your current license expires. Animal Services will send a renewal notification 45 days prior to expiration of your pet's license.
Pet Licensing Fee Schedule One-Year License Fee:
Non Sterile: $15
Three-Year License Fee:
Non Sterile: $45
The cost for a replacement county license tag is $3.
There are some instances where a dog, cat, and/or ferret are exempt, for medical reasons, from getting the Rabies vaccination. A county license is still required, and you must show proof from a licensed veterinarian indicating that your pet is exempt from the Rabies vaccination.
County licenses are sold at the Sumter County Animal Services kennel facility in Lake Panasoffkee and at the Villages Sumter County Service Center in Wildwood. In addition, there are some local veterinarians that sell county licenses. Please click on the link below for a list of locations.
