Immediately Before the Storm

When a Hurricane Watch Is Issued
Hurricane conditions are possible within 48 hours:
  • Frequently monitor radio, TV, or NOAA Weather Radio for official bulletins of the storm’s progress
  • Fuel and service family vehicles
  • Inspect and secure manufactured home tie downs
  • Begin covering all window and door openings with shutters or other shielding materials
  • Check food and water supplies
  • Keep a cooler with frozen gel packs for packing refrigerated items
  • Turn your refrigerator to its coldest setting
  • Check prescription medicines-obtain a 14 day (2 week) supply
  • Stock extra batteries for radios, flashlights and lanterns
  • Secure lawn furniture and other loose, lightweight objects, such as garbage cans, potted plants, etc.
  • Check and replenish first-aid supplies
  • Have an extra supply of cash on hand. Remember, if the power goes out, ATMs and credit card machines will probably not work
  • Complete preparation activities

Sustained hurricane force winds of 74 mph or higher are expected within 36 hours.
  • Closely monitor radio and TV weather reports
  • Follow instructions issued by local officials. Leave immediately if ordered to do so. Leave manufactured homes
  • Notify neighbors and family members outside of the warned area of your evacuation plans
  • Move your supplies to your safe room
Evacuate if you:
  • Live in a manufactured home
  • Are energy dependent or have special medical needs
If evacuating: Hurricane shelters will be available for people who have no other place to go. Do not leave your home for a shelter until local officials announce that the shelter is open.
