What is Sumter County Transit?

Sumter County Transit (SCT) is a department within the Sumter County Community Services Division.  SCT was created in October 1993 by the Board of County Commissioners.  Currently, SCT has 24 passenger vehicles in its fleet.

What does Sumter County Transit do?

SCT provides transportation services to individuals, agencies and organizations.  As Sumter County's designated coordinator, SCT is proud to provide clean, safe, dependable and economical transportation to all citizens of Sumter County.

How does it work?

Dial 568-6683.  A reservationist will answer your call and schedule a bus to take you to your destination.  Transportation is provided in a shared ride system.  A shared ride system is similar to a car-pool.  You are not alone but are traveling in the same bus with a group of fellow Sumter County residents who may have destinations located along the route to your destination.  This shared ride system helps maintain low operating costs and low fares.

When can I use the service?

Please call at least the day before your needed ride. There are a limited number of vehicles and trips available so be sure to call in advance.  Reservation hours are between 8:00am and 1:00pm.  We recommend you call early in the day to ensure a seat on a bus.

Are there other rules I should know?

There is a limit on the number of parcels you may carry on board the vehicle:  5 plastic grocery bags or 3 paper grocery bags.  Laundry taken on board is limited to 1 plastic bag per trip.  There is no smoking, eating, drinking or radio playing allowed.

If you cannot make a previously scheduled trip be sure to call and cancel your trip.  There is no charge for a cancelled trip.  However, if you "No Show" three times in a 90 day period, you transportation privilege will be suspended for 30 days.  Remember, we do not want to have to deny a trip to someone because of lack of space and a person who scheduled a trip not show up for pick up.  Be considerate of your neighbor's needs as you would your own.

If you need materials in accessible formats or require other accommodations, please call 568-6683.  If you use TDDS you can reach us through the Florida Relay Service 1-800-955-8771.

How much does it cost to ride?

$1.50 per one-way trip to ride anywhere in Sumter County.  For example, if you are going to a grocery store in Sumter County it would cost you $1.50 for the trip to the grocery store and $1.50 for the trip home.

I'm in a wheelchair, can I use the Sumter County Transit?

Yes you can!  Sumter County Transit has wheelchair accessible vehicles and specially trained drivers who can accommodate wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility assistance devices.  Guide and assistance animals are also allowed on SCT vehicles.  Please remember to tell the office of any special transportation needs you may have when you call to request service.
