Sumter County Jail Expansion Project Grand Opening

The Sumter County Board of County Commissioners held the official Grand Opening for the newly completed Jail Expansion project located at 223 East Anderson Avenue, Bushnell, FL on August 11, 2009 from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM at the new Intake and Release Sallyport located within the Jail Facility. The Sumter County Sheriff's Office provided guided tours after cutting the ribbon at the new facility.

The new $24,000,000 Jail Expansion was constructed at $238.00 per square foot, well below the R.S. Means national average.

The project includes the following five facilities:

1. Immediate Needs & Laundry Facility - 29,335 square feet
2. Additional Housing Facility - 19,052 square feet
3. Kitchen Facility - 44,699 square feet
4. Video Visitation - 1,955 square feet

The completed facilities provide a combined total of 404 beds and the kitchen facilities are capable of serving up to 4,500 meals per day.

All exterior block walls are poured solid with concrete and reinforced steel and the exterior compound fence is 12 feet in height with Concertina Wire on top, commonly referred to as Razor Wire, all for security purposes.
