Contractor licensing is a function of the Sumter County Building Department,and is in place to safeguard the health, property, and public welfare of Sumter County. Contractors who wish to obtain building permits in Sumter County may do so if they hold a State of Florida Certificate of Competency, or are registered with the State through Sumter County, or who hold a Sumter County Certificate of Competency.

 

State Certified
The following contractor categories may either take an examination and be certified through the State, or take an examination, be approved by Sumter County, and register with the State:
  • General
  • Electrical
  • Electrical sign
  • Building
  • Mechanical
  • Sheet Metal
  • Residential
  • Plumbing
  • Air Conditioning "A"
  • Commercial Pool/Spa
  • Specialty Structure
  • Roofing
  • Air Conditioning "B"
  • Residential Pool/Spa
Categories for Local Licensing
The following categories do not require an examination, nor do they require registering with the State, but do require a Sumter County Competency Card:
  • Carpentry
  • Concrete/Masonry
  • Masonry
  • Irrigation
  • Sign, non-electric
  • Stucco, Lath & Plastering
  • Concrete Placing & Finishing
