Sumter County's Mosquito Control Department sprays throughout the county beginning in the month of April through October annually. Spraying is done nightly by zones in the county. During the off-season the Mosquito Control Department is busy repairing and maintaining equipment, taking courses to keep up-to-date on techniques, chemicals and equipment and raising mosquitofish, which eat mosquito larvae, and transferring the fish to appropriate water sources.
Two types of spraying are done in Sumter County; night spraying, also known as Adulticing and Larvaciding, the killing of juvenile mosquito's. Chemical treatment for adult mosquitoes is the most visible form of mosquito control. In Florida, both ground and aerial applications are common in the summer months. With industry and government testing procedures, it is virtually impossible to use a control product which could have an adverse effect on people, animals or plant life. The insecticides being used today are not only highly effective but also degrade rapidly.
Larvaciding is a general term for the process of killing juvenile mosquitoes while in life stages (larvae and pupae) which only occur in water. Larvacide treatments can be applied from either ground or air in accordance with provisions of the Florida Pesticide Law. Contact pesticides, surface control agents, stomach toxins and natural agents are being used in Sumter County.
The Supervisor of Mosquito Control is licensed by the State of Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services in the category of Public Health Pest Control.
