Know your laws

All All domestic animals must be under direct control or on a leash when off the owner’s property.

If your dog is tethered, it must be a minimum of 8 feet long and tangle free for the health and well being of your animals.

It is a violation of the County Animal Ordinance and State Law to abandon or dispose of any animal on the property of another person or any public property.

Is your pet licensed? It’s the law in Sumter County. Under Sumter County Animal Ordinance, dogs and cats four months of age or older must be vaccinated for rabies and have a county license tag.

What to do when you find a lost pet?

Knock on doors - Most pets are found within 1,000 feet of their home.

Complete a lost/found pet form - Visit www.sumtercountyfl.gov/lost to view many options for both lost and found pets.

Post on your local lost and found pets social media pages - Facebook and Nextdoor are great social media pages to start with.

Can you foster the animal? If yes, great! Go ahead and do that. We are encouraging anyone in the community who finds a lost pet to help with fostering the animal first
