The Sumter County Board of County Commissioners and Sumter County Fire Rescue have partnered with the FDNY 343 Memorial Committee of The Villages to make this year's 9-11 Remembrance Ceremony a truly special and meaningful event. On the 8th Anniversary of the treacherous attack on American citizens, Sumter County Fire Rescue will pause to join FDNY veterans in remembering our nation's heroes. On September 11, 2009, at 8:30 a.m., a memorial mass will be held at St. Timothy's Catholic Church in The Villages, followed at 10:00 a.m. by an ecumenical service of remembrance for our Nation's Heroes that gave their all on 9-11-01. We invite all Sumter citizens and visitors and encourage all uniformed and public safety personnel, retired or active, to attend this most moving ceremony which will include the traditional "sounding of the bells" with a remembrance of names of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
