What is a Registered CPR Responder?: These are community members who have typically been trained in CPR and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and are willing to assist if an incident occurs near them. Today, the proximity is set to a half-mile (0.5) radius of the emergency location. If a responder is within that radius, they will receive the alert notification on their smartphone. If they are able to respond, they will indicate so on their smartphone and will be guided to the location (private or public) of the emergency. The map will also display any registered AEDs that are in the area.

1. 2. How do I become a Registered CPR Responder?: You should contact your community coordinator if your community is already an established PulsePoint AED community. If you’re unsure, or have any additional questions, please email administrative.services@sumtercountyfl.gov

3. How much does the PulsePoint application cost for my smartphone?: The PulsePoint Respond app is free to download for iOS and Android devices.

4. As a Sumter County citizen, how much do I pay for PulsePoint?: The cost of PulsePoint Respond is paid annually by Sumter County and free of charge to the community. There is also no cost to become a Registered CPR Responder.

5. How do I learn more about the PulsePoint Responder Program?: Every Monday (excluding holidays), beginning at 9:00 am, a PulsePoint orientation class will be held and typically lasts for about one hour. This class is open for anyone in the community to attend. Please keep in mind you will only be registered as a responder at the request of your community coordinator. Immediately following the orientation, support will be provided to anyone needing assistance installing the application on their smartphone. Prior to completion of the training, a test alert notification will be issued by the Emergency Communications Center to ensure the device(s) alert as they should prior to leaving.

7. What do I do if I stop receiving notifications on my device?: You are encouraged to notify your community coordinator for troubleshooting. Otherwise, please attend the next available orientation class held on Mondays. Time has been set aside after each class beginning at 10:30 am for situations such as this.

If the Registered Responder switches to a new device, a new email invite must be sent at the request of the community coordinator.
Ensure the smartphone is updated to the most recent software version.
Ensure location settings are enabled at all times.
For those that have a smartwatch paired to their device, please ensure PulsePoint notifications are disabled from the smartwatch application.
Android users will not receive an audible notification if their smartphone is silenced.
The smartphone is in a poor cellular service area. The notification may either be delayed or not received.

9. What is the PulsePoint AED Registry?: PulsePoint is integrated into the Emergency Communications Center software. When processing certain emergency calls, if an AED that has been added to the registry is within close proximity to the emergency location, the Public Safety Telecommunicator will be notified and will inform the caller.

10. Who owns the AEDs and what support will be provided by Sumter County?: AEDs are either owned by the individual PulsePoint communities or by the Sumer County Board of County Commissioners. For those AEDs that are unlocked and fully accessible to the public at all times, and are not on private property, Sumter County will commit to the replacement of batteries that reach their end of life and the replacement of defibrillator pads.
